American Indian Affairs

"As a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, I am committed to representing the voice of South Dakota's American Indians and American Indians/Alaskan Natives throughout the United States."

Senator Johnson maintains a strong working relationship with South Dakota's American Indian communities. Even with considerable development over the past generation, American Indian tribes in South Dakota face high unemployment rates, poor access to health care and education challenges.

Senator Johnson believes that with hard work and cooperation, progress can be made in reducing these burdens. Helping to spur small business growth is an important step in this process, which is why it is an important part of the Hometown Prosperity Plan. Senator Johnson has also introduced the Native American Small Business Development Act. The Act is designed to create new jobs and increase economic development in Indian Country.
